Aperite Cataractas! is dedicated to Tony Reed (January 19, 1990 - April 12, 2021)
Tony was only in Genevieve for a short period, during which time we played a number of shows as a Death Doom band, a noise band, and some material that would eventually become our first album, Escapism.
Geneveive started as a solo project for Eric in 2013 with the release and one-off performance of Hope/Desolation, a two-part piece written to audibly express an artistic shift for Eric back into Metal from performing Screamo and Folk (he had played Black Metal much earlier in his life). Around this time, Eric also started to write some weird Death Doom tracks with the intention of one day recording them with a full band.
After a short time frame when the material from Tape Machines was played primarily at hardcore and folk shows, Eric gave his demos of the Death Doom material to Noel Mueller of Grimoire Records in hopes of having some of his more serious material released to a broader audience. Once informed that it would be if he ceased the Tape Machines material, Eric went on to start trying various people out to fill the roles of the upcoming future of Genevieve.
Even before the process of weeding out various guitarists, bassists, and other riffraff, Eric knew he wanted his old friend Tony to be the front man. Eric and Tony had played in several bands in their youth and beyond (including R&r, A Farmer's Daughters and The Mantis Greenhouse), and the idea of having the powerhouse that is Tony Reed as the front man was an easy decision. Tony was elated with the idea of fronting a band again (it had been a while since the dissolution of projects he had been in years prior).
Once a solid lineup of Tony, Eric, Matt Powel, Pat Merson and Ryan Neal had been devised, they set out to learn some of these Death Doom tracks, performing the material once.
After that, Pat left and Genevieve went on to start writing songs that would end becoming Escapism. During this period of transition, Genevieve’s “Gen-Doom” set (featured here as “Awaken”) also came into being, featuring Tony, Eric, and other friends. It consists of feedback loops, tribal drumming, alternative percussion, keyboards, and a whole mess of screaming, recorded at the now-defunct F.H. Pappy’s in York, Pennsylvania.
Genevieve played a few other shows with Tony doing most of the vocals for future Escapism songs. Unfortunately, Tony was asked to leave the band during the Escapism recording sessions, marking another huge change for the band with Eric stepping into the lead vocal role.
With the three-year anniversary of Tony’s death coming and going, we decided to dive into the archives and see what we could find. This is a collection of the best Tony material. It consists of vocal takes from the Escapism sessions, early demos of the Death Doom songs, band practices, live performances, and several tracks from that era that were never performed live or overdubbed with other band members.
“Eclipses” was conceived during an eclipse on April 8, 2024 and compiled from recordings of Genevieve band practices, live encounters, vocal takes, experiments and even a little something taken from a live Dialetheist set where Eric joined our previous guitar player Ryan on stage, making noise and making vocal loops.
